I was walking around outside today, observing my Chinese tree peonies for action, and I spotted a white dove on our lawn! 0_o I wonder if it was released at St. Bridget's? It seemed pretty tame. Pretty pretty... o_o

As far as tree peony action goes, we'll be getting leaves, that's for sure. We may also get one flower. It's too bad our cherry tree doesn't bloom until May--we could have our own cherry-blossom viewing party but it'll be late. We have a speeeecial double-flowered cherry tree and it's supposed to be good that it blooms late, so the buds won't be killed by a late frost, but sometimes I wish it would bloom at the same time as everybody else's. Right now it's a spindly thing. I planted it 3 years ago.

We just planted a tree peony yesterday. A yellow one. No blooms for what, 2-3 years? A long but likely well worth it wait...

My first tree peony bloomed the first year, then didn't bloom last year. I think the unnaturally cold winter dried out the flower buds. =_= The plant just started growing from the base instead of from the buds it formed in the fall, so it survived, but no flowers...

A yellow tree peony? I think there's a Japanese hybrid that's yellow. Both of my tree peonies are Chinese because I like their habit more, but I'm sorely tempted to get a Japanese tree peony in yellow. Not until I see more action from these two, though! There's a famous tree peony farm in CT and I've been there once, and their plants are just gorgeous, but I'm not ready to spend over $100 on one...

Yep, the one we planted was Japanese. It came in the cutest vintage-style box and I couldn't resist!

I think that until recently, Chinese tree peonies were illegal to import, but I don't really think of the Japanese ones as "inferior", because their aesthetic is completely different. I actually like all kinds of peonies. Though the Chinese ones are really impressive. I've never seen flowers so big before. The ones I have aren't the "best" ones out there, but I've seen Chinese tree peonies with flowers as big as my head!

That was on a 13 year old plant, though. ^^;;;
