Writing and worrying...
May. 15th, 2007 12:01 amA problem with being a critical person when it comes to reading material is that I read my own writing and think to myself, "Well, this is garbage, too!" Sigh. I don't think that kind of discouragement will make me give up writing...I've already handwritten about 300 pages, if not more, but it's making me unhappy and self-conscious. I'm only producing a page a day now. =_=
Then again, I think it's worse to be the kind of person who thinks that every thing you write is gold. Granted, it's not just with writing, because I've run into people like this in a lot of different kinds of creative outlets. It's really damaging if you convince yourself that you have this special, wonderful talent, and you deserve to be admired. Granted, people like that can bask in their own self-satisfaction, but what happens when they don't get the attention they think they're entitled to? Never mind the fact that people who put themselves on a pedestal close themselves off to being inspired by other people's work, mainly because they don't want to give anybody but themselves credit for doing anything well.
And then there are the people who have so little inspiration for their own writing that they'd rather steal other people's material, then claim that the original author/artist doesn't deserve any credit for it, because *they* can serve the material better(even though they're basically just lashing out at the author for not supplying them with enough material for their own personal wank-fest). It's not so much fan fiction in general, but fan fiction writers who look down their noses at the original author and act like THEY are the ones with the real talent, and the author should just back off and hand the reins over the more capable fanfic writers. ::snickers:: It's still fan fiction, and even AU fan fiction has the dirty work of creating characters and an audience for said characters taking care of. In my opinion, you should read as much as possible, and if you're not satisfied with the way an author handles a story, find something better to read. The original author at least deserves credit for creating a story that you want to steal and warp to your own liking.
Now, how did I wind up going off on this rant? ^^;;;
